Choosing the Right Security System

Are you a homeowner or a business owner in search of a security system? It can be overwhelming to choose the right one; you don’t want an expensive system that has more features than you realistically need. Conversely, you don’t want a bare-bones system that doesn’t give you the protection and peace of mind you need. This is comparable to a Goldilocks scenario, neither too many, nor too few, but just right. Let’s take a deeper look at different security systems and whom they benefit as well, as well as both advantages and disadvantages:

Unmonitored system – An unmonitored system does not connect to a central monitoring station. Instead. A loud alarm will blare inside and outside the house to alert you and neighbors to an intruder. If you’re not home, however, your neighbors would have to call the authorities in the event of a break in or fire. One advantage of an unmonitored system is that you won’t have to pay to connect to a monitoring station. A disadvantage, on the other hand, is that you will have to rely on your neighbors, which can be hard if they’re not always home or if they aren’t exactly proactive.

Monitored system – On the other end of the spectrum is a monitored system. This connects to a central monitoring station so, in the event of a break in for example, the agent will contact the authorities. One potential problem with this is that it connects to the station via outside telephone lines. If a burglar is savvy enough, s/he will know to cut the lines to break this connection. You can, however, opt to connect it through your cell phone to combat this issue. Another downside is that there is a delay between contacting the central monitoring station and the agent contacting authorities. It is also more expensive than other non-monitored alarm systems.

Wireless system – This is probably the most bare-bones system. You can buy one at most hardware stores and install it yourself. As it doesn’t connect to a monitoring station, you won’t have to pay any fees. You can also choose your preferred settings, such as a camera. However, because it’s a cheap, store-bought alarm, you may encounter problems such as a limited distance between the cameras and the sensors. Also, these systems require more frequent battery replacement, which can be inconvenient at the wrong time as well as expensive.

Burglary Prevention Tips for Your Commercial Property

Burglary prevention can be difficult. It can be as simple as checking the status of your doors or as time-consuming as performing a risk and safety assessment at your residential apartment, retail center, industrial hub, office space, or other type of commercial property.

Here are some burglary prevention tips to help deter criminals and thieves.

Secure All Potential Entrances

Doors – Sturdy wood or metal reinforced doors should be used.  Some doors have an exterior glass. This should be made of laminated glass or “strong glass” to provide additional strength. Doors should have at least one single deadbolt lock and use as few keys as possible.

Windows – Just like doors with exterior glass, windows should be made of laminate or “strong glass.” Additional window treatments can be added to help prevent or deter smash and grab robberies.

Roofs– Hide and protect access ladders. Thieves could also gain access to rooftops with tree limbs, adjoining roofs, antenna towers, and drain pipes.

Potential entrances – Determined criminals can gain access through less traditional ways. It’s important to make sure those skylights, air ducts, crawl spaces, and attics are safely secured.

Add More Lighting

Additional lighting can help with burglary prevention plans. Criminals do not want to be seen. They rely heavily on the cover of night during their criminal acts. Property managers can install lighting fixtures that remain on all night or purchase motion-activated lights. Lights can be installed around entrances such as rooftops, roof access ladders, doors, and windows. Criminals may be able to see inside your property after business hours. If this is the case for your site, you can install low wattage lights inside your property. It can expose and show trespassers.

Maintain Exterior Shrubbery

Many commercial properties have shrubbery and plant life on the exterior of their buildings. Thieves could potentially hide behind plants. Motion-activated lights would not be able to register their movements. It’s important to maintain and groom the shrubbery to help avoid this problem. Putting in landscaping with prickly leaves and branches could be an effective part of a burglary prevention plan.

Install Fencing

A fence is usually one of the first lines of defense in burglary prevention. Fences should be tall and strong enough to deter criminals. It’s also important to make sure that the fence is in working condition. If there are any holes in or damage to the fence or under the fence line, repair it immediately.

You might not realize how susceptible you are to a home invasion since it has never happened to you before. However, in many cases, our locksmiths at North Brook Locksmith can often just walk up to your door and pick out plenty of things that would make your home a target for an intruder. This is because it is our job to know how to keep this from happening to you. We are well-aware of the most obvious things that a burglar would recognize, which you might not. Proper home security begins from the outside of your home and extends inside. If you’re not concerned about your home security simply because you have never experienced a break-in doesn’t meant that you can’t ever experience one. This is exactly what a thief is banking on, your letting your guard down or in some cases, never having your guard up. Crime is always on the rise, it is rarely on its way down. This is why homeowners need to be more concerned about the safety and security of their home and family now more than ever. We know a thing or two about security and that is why many homeowners in North Brook, Illinois relies on our residential locksmith services. They don’t just contact us to replace a key or have their locks rekeyed, some actually contact us to assist them in making their home more secure.

home securityWhere to Begin

When you contact one of our locksmiths to assist you with your security needs, the first thing that they will do is make a complete assessment of the outside of your home. They may check your windows, to see if there is a way to get inside from the widow, if there is a basement, how could a thief gain access through your basement. Do you have a garage with a door, perhaps this is an area that you never thought to put a deadbolt lock on, therefore, it would be easy for an intruder to gain access. Do you have signage in your yard or somewhere prominently displayed on the outside of your home that would suggest that you have a security system of some type or a monitoring service. This would be of particular interest to an intruder because most will not risk being discovered due to a security system. Depending on the size of your home, a more extensive assessment of the exterior of your home might be needed and this might require more than one locksmith to make this assessment. In fact, depending on the size of your home, it will also determine how much security will be required to keep out an intruder.

How Important Are Your Locks

You may think that the most important aspect of your home security is the type of security system you have installed. While a security system is certainly necessary, especially now-a-days, it isn’t the single most important part of your home security, your locks would be the most important. This is why it is important to choose wisely. If you forget to set your alarm or if there is an outage in the area that an intruder is aware of, they can still gain access into your home if the locks are not a good, solid, durable lock. This is why we encourage our customers to invest in the best quality of locks possible, especially for exterior doors. We often install a knob lock on exterior doors but rarely are they installed without being accompanied by a deadbolt lock. Deadbolt locks have proven to be the most efficient type of locks to keep out intruders. You may be wondering what makes them superior to other types of locks. It is because of the durable materials they are designed with and their locking mechanism. They can be placed on a door by themselves but they are generally placed on a door with an existing lock. They generally serve as an added source of security.

Keyless locks are considered high tech security. These are also becoming more popular for residential use. The keyless entry affords homeowners the opportunity to avoid having their house keys duplicated since a key will no longer be needed to enter and exit the home. A keypad will be installed and all that the person entering or exiting will need to do is input the correct code for the lock to open. It is as simple as 1-2-3!

Invest in a Security System

No matter how logical this sounds to most people, there are still plenty of homes without them. In fact, we often encourage homeowner to invest in a home security system, even if they do not have a monitoring service. You can always upgrade your system and include a monitoring service but a basic system offers security against, not only intrusion but also against fires and floods. This means they serve you for multiple reasons and are well worth the investment. There are some people who do not even have a security system but they have a decal on their front door to give the appearance of having one. In some cases this is all that an intruder has to see to avoid attempting to break into your home.

Covering All the Basis

You really do not have to break-the-bank to receive the level of home security that you require. You need the right person addressing your security needs. North Brook Locksmith has helped hundreds of homeowners get the right security for their home by consulting with them about their specific concerns. We check every inch of the homes interior and exterior so that we can develop a plan that is most suited for your family needs. Anyone that you hire to handle your home security should do the same. Making sure all the basis is covered requires and extensive evaluation of what you already have in place and how it can be improved upon. A reputable locksmith service can offer you this and more for your residential security needs.

Holiday Home Security Tips

While you celebrate the holidays remember that home burglars are also planning how to celebrate theirs possibly with you as a potential sponsor. People tend to relax during the holidays and therefore home robbers view this time as an opportunity to gain entry into your home for cash and cash equivalents like credit cards, gifts or electronic gadgets, jewellery etc. Here are a few tips of what home robbers look for when shopping for a house to burglarize. These tips will help you enjoy the holidays without incident.

  • Your home is a private place and should remain private, do not allow strangers inside your yard or home. Remember criminals also do intelligence gathering on how to gain entry into a home or valuables that can be obtained. Exercise common-sense precautions, including minimizing your profile, avoiding overt displays of wealth and maintaining good situational awareness. Criminals may sometimes be armed, if accosted, do nothing to resist or antagonize assailants.
  • The common trend with people nowadays is to post on social media updating their travel plans or current location which is an easy indicator that the person is travelling. Other users of social media can use this information to know that you will be away from home and will take this opportunity to carry out a burglary.
  • Burglars look for an easy entry with good escape routes. Don’t openly display your gifts in the front window so it’s easily visible from the street. It’s too tempting for them to smash the window and grab the wrapped packages.
  • Burglars look for occupancy cues like outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, or advertising flyers piling up in the letterbox. If you are going to be away during the holiday, get someone trusted to house-sit so that occupancy is guaranteed always.
  • Burglars know to look for the hidden door key near the front entrance. Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to a trusted neighbour.
  • Burglars prefer to enter through unlocked doors or windows. Sliding windows that are not secure can be seen from distance. One holiday problem can occur when exterior holiday light extension cords are run inside through a window and prevent it from being secured. Hire an electrician or handyman to install an inexpensive exterior outlet for your holiday lights.
  • Avoid posting your family name on your mailbox or on your house. A burglar can call directory enquiries to get your telephone number and call your home while in front of your house to confirm that you are away.
  • Don’t leave descriptive voicemail answering machine messages like, “You’ve reached the Moyo’s…we’re away in the rural areas for the holidays…please leave a message.” Burglars love to hear that they have plenty of time to break in and completely ransack your home. Some will even have time to pour themselves a drink while they are at it.
  • After the holiday, don’t pile up empty gift boxes from your new computer, DVD player, or stereo receiver on the street for garbage collection. This will attract burglars who will know that you have expensive gifts inside for them to steal. Break them down or cut them up to conceal the items better. After a lucrative burglary, the chances of being burglarized again are increased to steal the new replacement products.
  • Lastly, fortify your home by installing solid core external doors, heavy duty locks, longer screws in the lock strike plates and door hinges, and install secondary security devices on all accessible sliding windows. This may not out rightly prevent a robbery but will assist in delaying the robbers gaining access to your home and giving you ample time to call for help. It is very important to invest in a home alarm system.
  • As you travel to various destinations for your holiday, plan your journeys well and travel on time during the day so that you take it easy on the accelerator pedal.
